Where Education
Meets Engineering
Bijan Aalami
Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at San Francisco State University – a structural engineer and software developer – is an internationally-renowned educator and leader in the analysis and design of concrete structures, with a specialization in post-tensioning.
A graduate of University of London (Imperial College), Bijan, a native of Iran, has held positions including Professor and Vice-Chancellor of Arya-Mehr (now Sharif) University in Iran, followed by his appointment as President of Abu-Rayhan University and later Professor of Civil Engineering at San Francisco State University.
His decades of contribution to the post-tensioning industry were recognized through his initiation into the Hall of Fame of the Post-Tensioning Institute. Bijan received the American Concrete Institute’s Design Award for “application of advanced engineering to a notable concrete structure.”
As Principal of the former ADAPT Corporation (now part of RISA), Bijan created the software suite ADAPT, now RISA-ADAPT, used by concrete design engineers in more than 75 countries worldwide. His extensive publications remain the principal resource for practical design of post-tensioned buildings and bridges.
Bijan, a former Fulbright scholar is licensed Structural Engineer in California (SE), Charter Engineer (CEng) in the UK, life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Honorary Member of Argentine Structural Engineering Association.

Selected Lectures on
Post-Tensioning by Bijan
Over the last forty plus years, I traveled to over 45 countries; I met with local post-tensioning engineers; learnt about their practice; and held lectures on post-tensioning in over 100 cities.
I observed that post-tensioning comes in many shapes. Yet, the basics of post-tensioning is the same. It is grounded on the “first principles of engineering mechanics,” irrespective of local practice
Now, I take the opportunity to present to you what I have learned over the years from our colleagues. The material is organized in simple format and language using the first principles..

Bijan’s family name “Aalami”
Bijan’s family name “Aalami” was adopted by his grandfather from the title given to him by the King of Persia in 1922. It was
in recognition of the grand-father’s performance as Chief Justice of Isfahan. The title literally translates to “the most learned,”
AALAMI
In August 1922, King of Persia, Ahmad Shah Ghajar bestowed the title of “Saghaf-ol-Aalam” to Mirza Abu Torab the Chief Justice of Isfahan in recognition of the latter’s contribution as Chief Justice. Mirza Abu Torab and his decedents adopted Aalami as their last name – meaning “most learned”
