Bijan’s family name “Aalami” was adopted by his grandfather from the title given to him by the King of Persia in 1922. It was
in recognition of the grand-father’s performance as Chief Justice of Isfahan. The title literally translates to “the most learned,”

In August 1922, King of Persia, Ahmad Shah Ghajar bestowed the title of the latter’s contribution as Chief Justice. Mirza Abu Torab and his decedents adopted Aalami as their last name – meaning “most learned”
Recognition of Bijan’s grandfather as chief justice of Isfahan
We Ahmad Shah – The King of Persia – on recommendation of Reza Khan Minister of War and Minister of Department of Justice present a walking cane to Mirza Abu Torab Saghat-Ol-Aalam in recognition of his competence and service.
Reza Khan later became King of Persia and changed the name to “Iran.”
